01 – Viagem à Bulgária – Lom & Sófia – Introdução

Esta é uma viagem diferente das que fiz até agora. Após um interregno para realizar um mestrado em Pintura, na Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, eis que retomo estas lides expedicionárias, chamemos-lhe assim, através de uma “residência artística”. Uma residência artística é um local para onde os artistas vão, inseridos num novo contexto cultural, com o objetivo de se concentrarem na sua produção artística, ou investigação. Um segundo objetivo e não menos importante, é a fomentação do diálogo com os seus pares – artistas residentes; receber influências destes, e também da comunidade local, com vista ao desenvolvimento de novas ideias.
Para participar nesta residência artística respondi a um concurso internacional, e fui uma das 12 selecionadas. A residência decorre na Bulgária, e a própria residência chama-se “Water Tower Art”, que realizou agora a sua 7ª edição. Fomos recebidos por 5 maravilhosos artistas, 4 búlgaros e 1 de Hong Kong, que atuaram como mentores em várias áreas: performance, instalação, vídeo, fotografia, som e música, cerâmica, e, claro, pintura. A residência realizou-se numa pequena cidade chamada Lom, junto ao rio Danúbio, na fronteira com a Roménia.
Foram realizadas várias atividades, como concertos (houve músicos entre os artistas, e decorria em simultâneo um outro evento, musical: “Music Art Tabor”, que juntou os artistas de ambos), um workshop de cerâmica, caminhadas na região para conhecer o folclore e as tradições búlgaras e nórdicas, turismo de natureza na foz dos rios Lom e Danúbio, no que foi a antiga estrada romana “Via Istrum”, e no final foi apresentada uma exposição dos trabalhos realizados durante a residência, na galeria da Câmara Municipal de Lom.
Esta residência artística foi financiada pelo Ministério da Cultura da Bulgária, também com o objetivo de promover o desenvolvimento cultural de Lom. Os voos para Sófia foram por minha conta; a residência foi oferecida; foi-nos igualmente fornecido material – tintas, pincéis, papéis; ou outros materiais como equipamento de som, projetor e luzes, no caso dos colegas ligados ao som e música, por exemplo.

Esta viagem trouxe consigo uma grande novidade na minha metodologia de trabalho como artista-viajante. Conforme tive oportunidade de descrever na dissertação de mestrado, a qual incide sobre o tema de “artistas-viajantes” (e que pode ser consultada no repositório da Universidade de Lisboa neste link, em português, ou uma versão em inglês no meu website), até agora eu pintei a experiência da viagem após o regresso a casa. Na dissertação apresentei autores que trabalhavam como eu, bem como autores que, de forma diferente, pintam durante a viagem. Pela primeira vez tive oportunidade – aliás, era o objetivo mesmo – de pintar durante a viagem. Foi uma experiência extraordinária, e percebi que se justifica plenamente publicar umas crónicas de viagem sobre esta residência artística, onde inesperadamente acabei por dar uns deliciosos passeios de bicicleta por Lom, e onde tive vivências que viriam a revelar-se nas pinturas. Estas, também pela primeira vez, serão inseridas e publicadas nestas crónicas.
Apesar da diferença relativamente às viagens anteriores, creio que para o público que habitualmente acompanha estas aventuras, estas crónicas serão muito idênticas às anteriores. Espero que se divirtam e que fiquem a conhecer Lom, bem como a capital da Bulgária – Sófia, onde passei dois dias e meio. Esta viagem decorre entre 9 e 23 de julho de 2023.

This is a different journey from those I have undertaken so far. After a break during which I completed a Master’s in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, here I am resuming these exploratory endeavours, if you will, through an “artistic residency”. An artistic residency is a place where artists go, immersed in a new cultural context, with the aim of concentrating on their artistic production or research. A second objective, no less important, is to foster dialogue with their peers – resident artists – receiving influences from them and also from the local community, with a view to developing new ideas.
To participate in this artistic residency, I responded to an international competition and was one of the 12 selected. The residency takes place in Bulgaria, and it is called “Water Tower Art”, which is now holding its 7th edition. We were welcomed by five wonderful artists, four Bulgarians and one from Hong Kong, who acted as mentors in various fields: performance, installation, video, photography, sound and music, ceramics, and, of course, painting. The residency was held in a small town called Lom, by the Danube River, on the border with Romania.
Several activities were carried out, such as concerts (there were musicians among the artists, and simultaneously another event, “Music Art Tabor”, which brought together artists from both residencies), a ceramics workshop, walks in the region to learn about Bulgarian and Nordic folklore and traditions, nature tourism at the mouth of the Lom and Danube rivers, along what was once the Roman road “Via Istrum”, and finally an exhibition was presented showcasing the works created during the residency in the Lom City Hall gallery.
This artistic residency was funded by the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, also with the aim of promoting the cultural development of Lom. The flights to Sofia were at my own expense; the residency was offered free of charge; we were also provided with materials – paints, brushes, papers – as well as other equipment such as sound equipment, a projector and lights, for those colleagues involved with sound and music, for example.

This journey brought with it a significant innovation in my working methodology as an artist-traveller. As I had the opportunity to describe in my master’s dissertation, which focuses on the theme of “artist-travellers” (and which can be consulted in the University of Lisbon repository via this link, in Portuguese, or in an English version on my website), until now I had painted the experience of travel after returning home. In the dissertation, I presented authors who worked as I did, as well as authors who, in a different way, painted during their travels. For the first time I had the opportunity – indeed, it was the very objective – to paint during the journey. It was an extraordinary experience, and I realised that it is entirely justified to publish some travel chronicles about this artistic residency, where I unexpectedly ended up taking some delightful bicycle rides around Lom, and where I experienced moments that would later be revealed in my paintings. These, also for the first time, will be included and published in these chronicles.
Despite the differences compared to previous trips, I believe that for the audience who usually follows these adventures, these chronicles will be very much in the same vein as before. I hope you enjoy them and get to know Lom, as well as the capital of Bulgaria – Sofia, where I spent two and a half days. This journey took place between 9th and 23rd July 2023.
