Introdução – Art Basis

Durante esta extraordinária residência artística na Arménia tive oportunidade de explorar plenamente a minha vertente de artista-viajante, e pude concentrar-me intensamente no envolvimento interpessoal com a população local.
Deixei para trás todas as distrações, como redes sociais, noticiários, conflitos globais, e mergulhei profundamente neste contexto único que é a Arménia. Tive a minha estreia absoluta nesta região: eu nunca tinha estado neste país, nem nos países vizinhos.
Durante os 31 dias desta residência artística, a qual decorreu durante o mês de julho de 2024, estive sempre na posse de uma bicicleta, que foi gentil e gratuitamente disponibilizada pela organização, e a qual facilitou a interação com a população local. No entanto, a forte interação que ocorreu jamais teria sido possível se eu não tivesse sido tão calorosamente acolhida pelos arménios. A generosidade e hospitalidade por si demonstradas possibilitaram um envolvimento significativo e experiências enriquecedoras, como convites para entrar em suas casas e partilha de refeições tradicionais. Apesar da barreira linguística – praticamente ninguém fala inglês na Arménia, país onde o turismo é ainda “emergente“ – a abertura e o calor humano demonstrados por cada pessoa foram essenciais para aprofundar o entendimento da cultura e das tradições locais, tornando possível uma imersão significativa que fomentou o processo criativo subsequente.
Posso dizer que a entrega e o envolvimento emocional nesta experiência de viagem e criação artística foram intensos.
Espero agora, através destas crónicas, dar a conhecer um pouco mais deste país asiático – que fisicamente se encontra no continente asiático, mas que na realidade possui uma alma tão europeia. Frequentemente me esqueci que pedalava no continente asiático, com paisagens, religião e gentes tão semelhantes às europeias, e em particular à portuguesa. Colocar uma criança arménia ao lado de uma criança portuguesa, a distinção diria que é impossível.

Esta residência artística foi idealizada e promovida pela ONG Basis for Contemporary Art, em conjunto com o Hayastan All Armenian Fund, um fundo de desenvolvimento arménio.
Todas as despesas desta residência artística – voos, transportes, estadias, alimentação, materiais de pintura – foram generosamente suportadas pelo programa “Culture Moves Europe“, financiado pela União Europeia e implementado pelo Instituto Goethe.

During this extraordinary artistic residency in Armenia, I had the opportunity to fully embrace my role as an artist-traveller and to focus intensely on interpersonal engagement with the local population.
I left behind all distractions—social media, news, global conflicts—and immersed myself deeply in this unique context that is Armenia. This was my absolute debut in the region: I had never been to this country or its neighbouring nations.
Throughout the 31 days of this artistic residency, which took place in July 2024, I always had a bicycle at my disposal, kindly and freely provided by the organisation, which facilitated my interaction with the local people. However, the deep connections that developed would never have been possible without the warm welcome I received from the Armenians. Their generosity and hospitality enabled meaningful engagement and enriching experiences, such as invitations to their homes and the sharing of traditional meals. Despite the language barrier—hardly anyone speaks English in Armenia, a country where tourism is still “emerging”—the openness and warmth shown by each person were essential in deepening my understanding of the culture and local traditions. This allowed for a significant immersion, which in turn fostered my creative process.
I can say that my dedication and emotional involvement in this experience of travel and artistic creation were intense.
Through these chronicles, I now hope to share a little more about this Asian country—physically located in Asia, yet possessing such a profoundly European soul. I often forgot that I was cycling across the Asian continent, as the landscapes, religion, and people felt so similar to those of Europe, and particularly of Portugal. If you were to place an Armenian child next to a Portuguese child, I would say it would be impossible to distinguish between them.

This artistic residency was conceived and organised by the NGO Basis for Contemporary Art, in collaboration with the Hayastan All Armenian Fund, an Armenian development fund.
All expenses related to this residency—flights, transport, accommodation, food, and painting materials—were generously covered by the “Culture Moves Europe” programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut.
